Ladislau Gyémánt was born on September 12, 1947 in Oradea, Romania. He studied in
the Faculty of History of the "Babes-Bolyai" University Cluj, Romania, where he
received his PhD. (1982). From 1970-2006, he was a senior fellow researcher at the
Institute of History of the Romanian Academy in Cluj; and from 1990-2006 Director
of and Professor of Jewish history at the "Dr. Moshe Carmilly" Institute for Hebrew
and Jewish History at the "Babes-Bolyai" University in Cluj. During that time, he
also served as Deputy Dean and then Dean of the Faculty of European Studies at the
same university. Specialising in Central-European history of the 18th and 19th centuries,
he is the author of 22 books and 105 studies, with works on the history of Transylvania;
history of the Jews in Romania; European integration and Jewish Genealogy. In addition,
he is editor of the annual review Studia Judaica, I-XIII, Cluj-Napoca, 1991-2005;
and editor of the book series Bibliotheca Judaica, I-VII, 1994-2000. Finally, he
is correspondent for Romania of AVOTAYNU.
